CD PROJEKT RED revealed on Twitter that over 1 million players (new and old) visited Night City every day this week. For the uninitiated, Night City is the iconic backdrop for Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk is an action RPG set in a dystopian future where players are tasked with discovering what it means to be human before it’s too late. The game was originally released in 2013 and remained silent until E3 2018.
In this showcase, the game paid off hugely with a trailer featuring superstar Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand in the upcoming game. However, Cyberpunk 2077 experienced a controversial launch in December 2020 due to various bugs and glitches. Not only that, but many of the promised features either didn’t exist at launch or were severely undeveloped.
Still, thanks to multiple updates and the release of next-gen ports, Cyberpunk: 2077 is slowly rebuilding its integrity among its player base. Now, with the release of Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, that recovery is at an all-time high. Set in a cyberpunk world, Edgerunners tells the story of David Martinez, a cyberpunk who pushes his body, mind, and emotions to the limit to elevate Night City’s ranks. Studio Trigger produced the animation and has been praised for the show’s stylized visuals as well as its overall plot and theme.
CDPR also revealed the first major expansion for 2077: Phantom Freedom. This major expansion will launch next year, in which V will work with the new United States of America. Interestingly, the trailer features the return of Johnny Silverhand, and CDPR says the DLC will only come to next-gen consoles with PC.
