Suspect in custody after Washington Monument vandalized

A man has been detained after the Washington Monument was vandalized in Washington, D.C., authorities said. The U.S. Park Police reported late Tuesday that the area around the base of the monument was “temporarily closed” as a result.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released. No further details have been confirmed.

The Park Police added that the National Park Service “conservation staff will be working on the restoration process.”

The NPS also tweeted that its “team of experts” was “aware of the issue and will start working as soon as the morning.”

The Washington Monument is located on the National Mall, which is a national park. It was closed intermittently for several months during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
