Star Citizen Crowdfunds Half a Billion Dollars – and $100 Million In Less Than a Year

Cloud Imperium Games has now raised more than $5 billion for the development of Star Citizen, including $100 million since last November.

According to reports European playersthe space trading and combat sim that has been in development for over a decade now claims to have raised $500,111,757 from backers.

Star Citizen’s initial $2 million Kickstarter campaign kicked off in October 2012, but that’s just the beginning. Cloud Imperium Games has raised more and more money over the years, surpassing $400 million just ten months ago.

However, despite the staggering amount of funding, the game is still in alpha development and has no release date yet. For context, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt cost $81 million and took about 5 years to develop. Red Dead Redemption cost between $8 billion and $100 million and also took five years.

Star Citizen creator Christopher Roberts said in 2020 that the various game elements promised over the years are not pipe dreams, and they won’t take decades to come to fruition. A year later, however, the advertising regulator warned the studio over the marketing of its concept ship, saying it needed to make it clear that it was selling a product that didn’t exist yet.
