Star Citizen Crowdfunding Reaches $500 Million After A Decade

Crowdfunding for Star Citizen has reached a new milestone, with Cloud Imperium Games now raising over $500 million for its development. The game initially started crowdfunding on Kickstarter in October 2012, quickly amassing over $2 million on the platform and starting a trend that would see it amass more cash regularly over the years.
as found European players, at the time of writing, the current total investment from over 4 million backers is $500,121,052. Notably, Star Citizen reached the $400 million milestone last November, meaning it has amassed $100 million in funding in the past 10 months alone.
After a decade of development, Star Citizen is in the alpha stage, and a final release date for the full game release has yet to be announced. The Alpha version contains many features, starships, and locations to explore, but the highly anticipated Squadron 42 single-player campaign has yet to materialize. Star Citizen’s single-player adventure is one that fans have been waiting for for years, and the story features a number of big-name actors such as Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, and Gillian Anderson.
Development wasn’t without controversy, though, as Cloud Imperium found itself in trouble with the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) last year, as ships advertised for sale couldn’t be played or even seen in-game.
Cloud Imperium has also started limiting the number of details it shares with the community in its roadmap, Explain with the studio Its “most enthusiastic players” see these features as promises and grow increasingly frustrated when those goals are pushed back and pushed to a later date.
