World’s Biggest Gaming Company, Tencent, Hires Former PlayStation Boss Shawn Layden


Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has announced his next move. He recently joined Tencent, the Chinese tech company, the world’s largest gaming company, as a strategic advisor.he at LinkedIn (by VGC).

“In this new role, I look forward to advising, assisting and supporting the Tencent team as they deepen their activities and commitments in an industry where I have spent most of my career,” Ryden said. “We are at an epoch-making moment in gaming and interactive entertainment. Layden started at PlayStation in 1996 and worked his way up to chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios before leaving the company in 2019. In addition to Tencent, Layden is a strategic advisor to Streamline Media Group, which helps “bring brands into the virtual world.”

According to Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, Tencent is the largest gaming company on the planet today, ahead of PlayStation and Xbox.

Tencent owns League of Legends studio Riot and Path of Exile developer Grinding Gear, and has invested in Epic, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, and more. The company is also creating its own Western studio, and recently launched a new company led by Star Wars, Halo and Battlefield crews.

As for the PlayStation, a recent report said the hardware version is coming with a removable drive.
