DLSS 3 Promises Big Performance Boosts, But Only Works On New GPUs

For the past two generations, DLSS or Deep Learning Super Sampling has been one of the best reasons to invest in Nvidia GPUs.Today, Nvidia revealed DLSS 3— The latest iteration of supersampling technology, requiring the company’s new RTX 40-series GPUs.

DLSS lets games run at higher frame rates by reducing the internal rendering resolution and using machine learning to upscale it back to the resolution you want. It works well and the latest implementation is very close to native rendering while offering a huge performance boost. DLSS 3 seems to improve this further by using AI-powered optical multi-frame generation, an approach that allows your GPU to generate a whole new frame of the game, not just a small subset.

According to Nvidia, the new process produces seven out of eight frames while also tracking object position data, not just pixels, to reduce unwanted glitter on complex geometry. As Nvidia says, DLSS Frame Generation will inject new frames into your game, while Nvidia Reflex will be used to maintain high responsiveness to compensate for new frames not reporting user input back to the game. Nvidia says that DLSS 3 actually cuts latency in half compared to native rendering.

Nvidia highlights DLSS 3 with a short clip of Cyberpunk 2077. Running without any DLSS, this particular setup and resolution configuration (undisclosed) runs well below 22fps. This rises to 66fps when using DLSS 2, which the game currently supports. However, with DLSS 3, the same scene now runs at 100 fps. The performance boost is impressive, but it’s hard to tell if there’s any compromise in overall image quality.

One downside of DLSS 3 currently is that it relies on Nvidia’s latest GPUs. Nvidia says the RTX 40 series supports DLSS, which is currently limited to the RTX 4090, RTX 4080 16GB, and RTX 4080 12GB. This means that the technology cannot be used to bring more life to existing GPUs, unlike what DLSS 2 did when it launched.

There are currently 35 games and engines ready to support DLSS 3, and Nvidia says more games and engines are coming soon. You can find the list below.
