Neil Blomkamp (District 9) is directing a script reportedly written by Jason Hall (American Sniper) and Zach Bellan. Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti of PlayStation Productions will serve as producers.

The film’s synopsis reads: “Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish-fulfillment story of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills have won a series of Nissan races to become a true professional racing driver.” It seems odd to adapt a video game without using its plot — it’s worth mentioning that, as a racing game, Gran Turismo has no plot.

Another report from hollywood reporter Say I Never Had star Darren Barnet also joined the Gran Turismo movie and played a rival to the Madekwe character.

Filming started this week in Hungary.

Blomkamp is no stranger to video game movies, as he worked on a halo movie with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson a few years ago before everything fell apart. After Halo collapsed, he and Jackson went on to work on District 9, which was a rabid success. Blomkamp later directed Elysium with Matt Damon. In addition to his ongoing work in film, Blomkamp is also working with developer Gunzilla on a battle royale game called Off The Grid, due for release in 2023.

The Gran Turismo movie will be released on August 11, 2023.
